Repairs for seasonal homes

Home Repairs While You Are Up North

Half the year you live here, and that is when you want to enjoy the place, not spend it waiting on repair work. Hand Jeff the list and come back to it finished.

Dust and Noise Are Easier When You Are Not Living In It

Think about the jobs you keep putting off because you do not want your winter torn up. New flooring means moving every piece of furniture. A tile job means a bathroom you cannot use. Paint means smell and drop cloths.

If the house is empty for six months, you have the perfect window. The furniture can be moved once, the work can go at its own pace, and you are not stepping around tools on your way to the coffee maker.

Before the work starts, you and Jeff settle what is getting done, what it will cost and how he gets in. No surprises.

Jobs That Fit This Well

  • Tile work in showers, bathrooms and entryways
  • Laminate and tile flooring
  • Interior and exterior painting
  • Drywall patches and repairs
  • Door adjustments and door installation
  • Small repairs around the house
  • Deck repairs and rotted boards
  • Cleanouts and hauling off what you no longer want

“He did great tile work in my bathroom shower at a reasonable price.”

Small Problems Grow While Nobody Is Looking

The University of Florida guide says heavy seasonal rains will force water inside a home if there are defects in the outside of it, and that algae and mildew follow. It tells owners to check caulk, weatherstripping, gutters, and cracks in walls before leaving.

None of those are big jobs on their own. A gap around a window is a tube of caulk in April. It can become a much larger repair if the summer rain finds it first. So if you are making a list, put the outside of the house on it, not just the rooms you see every day.

Jeff handles the handyman work himself. If a job needs a specialty license, he will tell you so. You can read more about his general handyman repairs here.

How a Repair List Gets Done

1

Make your list

Big or small, write it all down. Photos by text help if you are already gone.

2

Go over it with Jeff

He looks at the work and gives you a free, honest estimate.

3

Agree on the plan

What gets done, in what order, and how he gets in. All of it settled up front.

4

Come home to it

You get back to Florida and the list is done, not waiting for you.

How to Write a List Jeff Can Price

Go room by room and write down what is wrong and what you want it to look like when it is done. "Bathroom floor tile is cracked by the tub, replace it" tells him far more than "fix the bathroom." If you have already picked out tile or paint, say so. If you want his opinion, say that too.

If you are already out of state, send photos by text with your list. Some jobs can be talked through that way, and some will need him to see them in person first. He will tell you which is which.

Repair Questions From Snowbirds

That is something you and Jeff settle before any work starts, based on the job and what you are comfortable with.

Jeff takes on anything from a small repair to larger jobs like flooring. Tell him what you have in mind, and he will tell you straight if it is one he should take on.

Give him your dates when you get your estimate. Starting early gives you the best chance, so call before you leave if you can.
